Etymology of alter

Alter is related to the greek allos [other] and allotterοs (αλλότερρος,αλλότριος), [foreign, different, one as different from another]

From the same root: alternative, alternate, altruism, alteration, alternately, alternation, alter ego, alterable.

In modern Greek
a) Allos: other, different [άλλος]
b) Allotriono: alienate, estrange [αλλωτριώνω]
