Etymology of buffalo

Buffalo derives from the Portoguese bufalo, which in turn came from the Latin bufalus, a variant of bubalus (wild ox), from the Greek boubalos (buffalo; βούβαλος), from bous (ox, cow; βους).

In modern Greek
a) bubalos (or vuvalos or vuvali): buffalo [βούβαλος]
b) bubala (or vuvala): female buffalo [βουβάλα]

OED
