Origin of rural, room
Rural comes from the Latin ruralis (of the countryside) from rus (gen. ruris; open land, country), which derives from the Greek arura (arable land) from the verb aroo (cultivate, farm, plough).

In modern Greek (Romeika, the language of Romei-Romans)
a) arureos: big rat, field-mouse [αρουραίος]

Η λέξη rural (αγροτικός) προέρχεται από το Λατινικό ruralis από το rus (γεν. ruris; γή, εξοχή, ανοικτός χώρος), το οποίο προέρχεται από το ελληνικό άρουρα (καλλιεργήσιμη γη) από το ρήμα αρόω (οργώνω, καλλιεργώ). Από την ίδια ρίζα: άροτρο και άροσις. Γνωστή είναι και η φράση του Αχιλλέα: ¨εγενόμην άχθος αρούρης”.
